About the project

The Brief

The Safety Framework Review (SFR) was a major, multi-year program reviewing every aspect of safety at the Department of Education.

In a business partnering role as lead facilitator, I worked with other facilitators and the SFR project team to support onsultation activities. The engagement commenced with a major conference-style event in July 2021 for approximately 45 participants from across Queensland.

In designing the workshop, the facilitation team felt that the afternoon segment needed a ‘lead-in’ that would reset participant thinking towards a more positive future.

I was asked to create that experience.

The Solution

I designed a short session around the event that became known as the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ - US Airways flight 1549 that ditched into the Hudson River on January 15, 2009 following a bird strike.

My personal experience being in New York on the day of the ‘miracle’, combined with my aviation background, allowed me to build a story-based presentation that was emotive and contextually-relevant to the audience.

My intent was to shift the audience mindset away from Human Factors errors and towards Human Factors success, as a segue to the other afternoon sessions looking at ‘future state’.

The multimedia element compromised 6 minutes of footage from the movie ‘Sully’, overlaid with more than 70 callouts demonstrating the Human Factors at play.

I paused the video at key points to provide commentary and posit challenging questions to the audience around the future of ‘safety leadership’ at the department.
Testimonials
I’ve never seen a group of education professionals so engaged and moved by a presentation and interested in how this concept might impact the work that they do.

I remember at one point a number of people had to leave to attend another meeting, but announced to the room that they didn’t want to leave and miss any of the presentation!

Some of the principals who had to leave were asking Matthew if they could be sent examples of the presentation and if he would be available after the event to explore the concept in more depth.
